Notch Video Makes a Pledge for Diversity
A commitment to increasing female creators in the notch community from 8% to 50% by 2023
Toronto, ON August 22, 2018 - Notch Video was founded six years ago with two goals in mind – to create killer content while disrupting how brands approach advertising. “While we’re very happy with what we’ve achieved since then, we also have to acknowledge having the same blind spot as many other companies in our industry: the majority of the creators we work with don’t reflect the diversity of the audience we’re trying to connect with, mobilize, and move with our work,” says Ian Buck, Managing Director, Notch Video.
Since 2012, Notch has generated more than $7.5 million in assignments for content creators within their community, but not enough of this has gone to female-identifying creators. So, Notch is kicking off this pledge by making a commitment to increasing gender diversity among the creators they work with and in the stories they tell.
“We know the importance of gender diversity – and the diversity of thought that it spurs – not just in creative endeavours, but in society as a whole,” says Mia Pearson, CEO MSL Canada and Co-Founder Notch Video, North Strategic, NVOY. “As a first step, we will be giving more women the opportunity to take a leading role on production. As a fast follow, we will extend this commitment to increasing gender diversity in our database of creators.”
Notch’s commitment to gender diversity includes:
- Increasing the number of female-identifying creators in the Notch community from 8% to 50% by 2023
- Joining Publicis Groupe, Notch’s parent company, in supporting #FreeTheBid and including at least one female or all-female team when presenting creative treatments to clients
- Updating Notchvideo.com to include a section dedicated to the amazing work by females in the Notch community, showcasing the talented women available for work
To kick-start this commitment, Notch reached out to their creator community to commission video treatments from female creators; many amazing treatments were put forward but there was one that rose above the rest. An all-female crew – including a female Director and female Director of Photography – then produced this inspiring and uplifting video that was released today. Beyond kicking off Notch’s commitment to working with more women, the video will raise awareness of the issue of gender diversity in the industry while encouraging more companies to start taking action.
“This video was made in the spirit of encouraging, supporting and championing female creators to come forward and take up space,” says Steph Kelly, Director, Editor and Art Director. “When you're working in a predominantly male industry, seeing talented females in positions traditionally held by men on set has enormous potential to nurture young women and embolden new talent that otherwise would have slipped through the cracks. Representation really does matter and has advantages for the agency, client and industry as a whole.”
